It's a pretty dark history, and given recent violent events in the news, you can watch this later if you're not in the mood. (There's some simulated gunplay and morbid graphics.) But there are reenactments by actors in costumes and lots of cool old photographs. I narrate some of this piece and make a brief appearance.
As an aside, it would be interesting if one day we could do some kind of video companion similar to this for the podcast. Thanks to AOL Video for inviting me to participate.

Very good! For many years we lived in Manhattan and nearly every(!) weekend would travel down to lower Manhattan (Chinatown, Lower East Side, Bowery, Financial District, etc.) and take our own walking tours of the sites we would read about in period newspapers and books. We’d plot out the sites on current street maps. Absolutely fascinating – especially since the whole area down there still has a LOT of the original buildings and hasn’t changed that much. The Bloody Angle is well-known to us. Hope you do get to make videos like this one!
